Newman Centre Catholic Chaplaincy - Mary: More or Less

Event Date:
Thursday, October 18, 2018 - 7:00pm - 8:00pm

The Anglican and Catholic Mariology of John Henry Cardinal Newman presented by Dr. Peter Gittens, Lecturer at St. Augustine's Seminary.

Following the Reformation mentality of “Sola Scriptura” which minimized Marian expression and devotion, Roman Catholics countered by maximizing all Marian expression and devotion.

John Henry Newman, having always had a personal devotion to the Virgin Mary, as an Anglican, never went beyond the minimum that Scripture said of the Mother of Jesus.

As a Catholic, he avoided the excesses in Catholic Marian expression and devotion, by highlighting a Christocentric and Ecclesiotypical Mariology; a balanced Mariology.
