THEOLOGY ON TAP: Synods — Pope Francis' Vision for Renewal

Event Date:
Monday, September 25, 2017 - 7:00pm - 9:00pm
All young adults (19-39) are invited to join us for an evening of thought-provoking conversation on theological topics!
Special guest: Dr. Michael Attridge, BA, MA, STL, PhD, Professor, University of St. Michael's College (Systematic Theology, Christology, Vatican II.) We'll discuss “Full, Conscious, and Active Participation” - Church Synods and Pope Francis’ Vision for Renewal.

The word “synod” in its original greek suggests travelling along the same path together. In its more common usage in the Roman Catholic Church since then, the word indicates a gathering of bishops and religious superiors who meet periodically to address specific concerns. Synods in the early church were quite common until they fell into disuse in the middle ages. In 1965, Pope Paul VI reestablished the synod as a means to continually renew the Church. Since then the synod has gathered to discuss such things as laity, priesthood, bishops, the Word of God, and so on. Now, in our upcoming synod, Pope Francis is focusing our attention on the future of the Church – our young people! On Sept 25, I’ll talk about synods, the ministry of Pope Francis, and how the Pope is putting in place an exciting plan for Church renewal – one that invites everyone to travel together. This journey begins in the areas in which we live and requires the full, conscious and active participation of us all.
