The Working Centre in Kitchener is a community development organization that has roots in the strong tradition of Catholic Social Teachings and a radical rethinking of the importance of thoughtful personal action. Recent writings, speeches and actions of Pope Francis are giving new life and reinforcement to these ideas. Join us as we explore these social teachings with examples from The Working Centre’s rooted traditions and think about practical ways these challenging ideas can be practiced in our daily lives.
Rebecca Mancini is part of an organization called The Working Centre which has a 33 year history of rooting itself in downtown Kitchener by developing a community-based response to unemployment and poverty. It is a creative and intentional community that continues to foster inclusive and affordable access-to-tool projects that include an Employment Resource Centre, St John’s Community Kitchen, Street Outreach and Supports, Psychiatric Outreach Clinic, Queen Street Commons Café, Hacienda Sarria Market Gardens & Greenhouse, Worth a Second Look Housewares and Furniture, the Green Door Clothing, The Commons Studio, Recycle Cycles and Affordable Supportive Housing. The Working Centre was founded by Rebecca’s parents and she has grown up surrounded by the virtues and practices of intentional action rooted in openness to others. As an adult she has chosen to commit to the work and is an active part of The Working Centre community.
